SEWS is automatically turned on for all hazards at Emergency Warning and Evacuation levels (excluding Safe to Return).
Turning off SEWs
Warnings Officers can turn off SEWs at the request of the Incident Controller. The Incident Controller and Public Information Officer should consider JSOP04.01 Schedule 1 before the decision to turn off SEWs is made.
A Warnings Officer must not turn off SEWs without authorisation of the Incident Controller. Approval of the Incident Controller is required even in situations where insignificant changes have been made to the warning.
To turn off SEWs slide the slider to OFF. This is found on the location page (next to Sirens and Community Fire Refuges).
Turning SEWs back on
If the Incident Controller has authorised that SEWs be turned off for a warning (for example if an Emergency Warning will be issued overnight with the next update early in the morning) then the IWO will need to turn SEWs back on when the Emergency Warning or Evacuation message is significantly altered. Do this when you edit the warning by sliding the slider back to ON.
Standard Emergency Warning Signal (SEWS)
SEWS is used to alert radio listeners and television viewers that an official emergency announcement is about to be made concerning an actual or impending emergency. You can hear the SEWS sound here.
